Our friends over at absolute punk have been featuring a short series of clips called "what is moneen?". These were teasers leading up the release of the dvd. here are the first three.
alright, on with the old log...there is another MTV LIVE update within that a well.
You ever been stuck in a basement and told not to come out until you are ready? It is not easy to stay away. Well, let me say it was great to come out of the basement for a day. MTV LIVE was so much fun. We cannot thank everyone enough at MTV for being so kind to us. you can see the clips online if you missed it on tv.
(UPDATE)
Here are the direct links that get you around the confusing instructions that I left in the last message.
I am not sure if anyone one is able to watch these if you live outside of canada. Sorry if that is the case. If I find any on you tube I will post them.
We played a new song and two older ones. It was our first show with Steve and I could not have asked for a better return. Thanks so much for everyone who came out. We could not believe the welcome we got.
It made us feel like we should get our butts in gear so we can have field trips more often.
The dvd is now out. Thanks for all the messages of nice words we have been getting about it.
We have been so busy getting ourselves ready to play and mixing the new demos that we have had no time to put up any clips lately. I am working on that right now. so sorry about that.
Well again thanks for being so nice to us even though we went into hiding on you for a bit. K
The dvd release is getting close. Thanks so much for the response so far with the pre order. To keep you tied over until you get the dvd, you can find new DVD clips over at absolute punk. We will be putting up new clips each week.
as well, you can check up on vagrant as they will be letting us know about new clips too. Vagrant records
........
As well, there has been a little bit of confusion with the MTV LIVE show. As far as we know, we will be playing on the 12th. The MTV.ca site says the 5th. But like I said we are going to show up on the 12th. If we are a week late...then so be it.
We are proud to announce that we will be playing MTV LIVE. This will be our first show back and it would be great to have some friends there with us. Hope to see you all. K
Paul the intern of MTV LIVE is fighting hard once again, but this time using his vocal chords. We teamed up yesterday for his MEDIA IDOL audition. We performed "time after time". Paul sang like a champ. I made a joke to the camera guy about Paul being the focus and to not worry about me. He really took me seriously. I swear that elbow is mine. As well I swear that there is actually guitar being played in the song.
anyways. here is what you have to do. VOTE FOR PAUL!!!
VOTE HARD!!! VOTE WELL!!!! VOTE AS MUCH AS THEY WILL LET YOU!!!!!
Do you think Paul needs a bunch of under age girls holding signs that he had to help them spell to help him win? no, he has HEART. K
Happy April Fools everybody. AKA Jim Bridges birthday. AKA Muse dvd release day. I am not sure which I am most excited about. Well, I actually do know but don’t want to make my brother sad by saying which it really is. In other DVD news, we have a release date for the moneen dvd "it all started with a red stripe" 05.13.08 is the date for north american release. I have no idea for anywhere else in the world as of right now. But we will have it online for you if it is does not end up in store near you. Today was a big day. I spent all day working on vocals for some new songs. We plan on having some finished demos this week which means I have to actually have finished singing parts. I am not sure why, but we put a lot of time into the music and then have to cram the night before the test to finish singing. Somewhat backwards since 99% of people who listen to music only really listen to the singing. I just hate forcing lyrics and melody. My theory has always been to let it come naturally. Mind you that is not always the fastest way to do it. But like we have said before, everything needs to mean something. I will never just do things to do them.
We have started posting April videos onto the moneenminisite. Now we are caught up and can post videos every other day as long as something worth while happens.
on another note, I watched some of the rage against the machine concert from Coaca. It actually made me want to smash everything. That band is really a stealth favorite band of mine. I always forget how much I love them. I love their honesty. Very real band. is rage considered RAP-ROCK? hmmm, hope not. K

We had such a blast at Wakestock this year. Big thanks goes out to everyone who came out as well as all the bands and organizers for making this such a great day. below you can view some videos of the craziness that took place in the indie villiage.
We played SCENE FEST this last weekend and it was a great time. In fact MTV got my inner most deepest feelings on tape. Well, not really...It is more footage of me rambling like a crazy man about nothing. Well, actually not nothing...rambling on about SCENE.
It was great to have everyone show so much love for us this weekend. we played two shows. An acoustic show, then another full show on the main stage. We thought that there would only be a handfull of people at the acoustic show, but it was insane. So many people came out. Thanks for that. The main set was really great too. We could not beleive how many people showed up to both of the shows. We have been hiding for a bit working on being good hiders and it is really nice to come out and play to alot of friendly people. so thanks. and as a gift you can go follow this link and watch me say stupid things. Thanks again. K
We need to thank all our friends over at MTV for bringing us back for a second performance. This time we played three songs acoustic getting ready for SCENE fest this weekend in ST KITS. They played "this is all biger than me" and you can find two more songs here at www.mtv.ca
Just follow the chris tucker link.
We got to meet Chris tucker as well. I love that man! We saw him walk by our rooand I called out to him "WHAT UP T?!?!" The best part is, he actually came back to our room to say "whats up guys?!?!?!?" We al started screaming and then i asked him if I could touch him to get some of his power. Luckily he was not freaked out. I like poeple that are not afraid of us.
We also met Bob Rock. That sort of ends there. Yup, we met him...great. good luck with the band friend.
At the end of the show I had a push-up contest with paul the intern, who I must say is now what I consider a friend. Then I played GUITAR HERO with diane. She dominated me. I kept telling her we should be on the same team co-oping our way to stardom in the guitar hero world. She had technique, I had moves...put em together and that is a duo...but no, she wanted to hate and be enemies and make my family look bad...well she did, and was very god at it. We had a great time at MTV and hope you guys enjoy the songs we played. Take care all and see you at summer of the summerfests coming up.
Know one really knows what this is...but that is what makes this amazing. All we know is this is the new movie that LOST Producer J.J. Abrams is working on. No one was given scripts before shooting and there is still no title even though the trailer was played before transformers. I love it...just screwing with everyone! We should be writng a new record, but instead I get stoked about weird monster movies. Here is a screen shot because that is how hyped I am right now.
We did some interviews for MTV for a segment called Making The Band 4 Quick Chats. These will be aired during the premier of Making the Band 4 which airs tomorrow night at 10 PM eastern time on MTV. Thanks to MTV Canada for making us a part of such a fun segment.
Hey Everybody, I recently sat in as a guest on the Hod Dog Log Jam podcast. They choose a theme for each of their podcasts and only talk about and play songs within the theme. This time they chose the theme of "Cities of the world," and gave me a ring to see if I'd drop in and share some my stories set in the various cities Moneen has been to.
I had a blast with Nick and Alex recounting some of these nutty stories, and I'm starting to thing I should write a book or something!
Check out the first of two episodes here: http://www.hotdoglogjam.com/
Don't you just love the Summer time? I fully encourage global warming (just kidding!)
We love Australia, our recent tour there with Alexisonfire was amazing. We did up a tour journal that you can check out. Click the link below to read about the tour and see some pictures.
Hey. So we are home for the summer now. I am at the point where after tour we have all gone our seperate ways and have resorted to doing what each of us do when we have downtime. We have all been keeping ourselves really busy with home repairs, painting, guitar hero, swinging around new york city and probably creeping on the internet a little bit as well.
We have a few shows over the summer. Some of the festivals we are playing are SCENE FESTIVAL in ST CATHERINES, WAKESTOCK in TORONTO and a couple others that have not been totally announced. It should be a good summer. Here is the scariest part...writing a new record.
I always need a little break from everything in the world before I can jump into writing. When I start I go in head first and never come out until we feel finished or burnt out. It is also I little scarey to write new stuff. We tour so much that when it is time to write again I almost forget how to. But like riding a bike, you never really forget. I have a couple new songs, at this point we dont really know what direction we will be going in, bu I know I have the destructive gene back in my system again. I have been really into movement and riffs lately...hahaha sounds funny. we may try some new stuff this summer you never know.
Hippy is also doing some solo shows. that should be really cool. I have alsways liked hippys own stuff alot. We tour too much for him to get to do that as well. But i am trying to get him to come over and record some of his new songs at my place. Hippy and I are going to do a second set at SCENE fest. We are going to play acoustic just to make sure we can really get to hang out with people since this is the first time we have done SCENE. Should be fun.
I have really been into PLANET EARTH, after the UK trip we were all hooked. It is the best nature doc you can get. Some friends showed me this bird...crazy. I put the clip up here for everyone.
well...that is about it for now. make sure to stop by, we are going to post demos and clips from the writing of this new record. when we have some that it.
we are also putting some merch online that you could only get on tour...so check that as well. www.mymerchtable.com
hey. Go to this link and vote for our friends ALEXISONFIRE, CITY AND COLOUR and BILLY TALENT for the MUCHMUSIC video awards. Now they may be in the same catagory so find a way to cheat the system and vote more than once...one for each. HAHAHAHA!
As well, watch out for the CANCER BATS nomination as well. Thanks. K
so much has been happening, yet there is so little time to actually talk about it. I have been a bad friend. BAD KENNY BAD KENNY!!!! I always like sharing things and lately I have been sharing nothing! Times have been so good too! All the tours in the last few monthes have been pretty un beleivable. so much so that I dont even care about spelling anything right.
We leave for australia tommorrow, so I am going to have to train myself to sit in one position for an extended period of time. I am not very good at that.
It really feels like we have won. won what, I am not sure...but things could not be better. After doing so many supporting tours, playing the same 5 songs over and over we finally get to play as many songs as we can to people who actually want to be there with us. (that means you!) I said this recently and realize how true it really is. Everything we have been working for over the years all comes down to this right now. Sitting in a van for days on end, breaking so many guitars over my face, hippy never showering just to get a second more sleep...all of that over the years has come down to the last 2 or 3 months. So many great shows, the UK tour was great, canada with sparta was one of our favorite tours. Bamboozle this year blew us away. The MOD CLUB in Toronto made me almost want to cry. We got to do that US headline tour. The best thing about all the shows...the fact that for the most part, the poeple there actually wanted to be there with us. Getting to do so many headlining tours in so many places makes everything seem like it has all come together. this might not really make sense. but, when we play and I get to look out and see people singing with us it makes me more happy than you know. hahaha...I get so sappy, but I really am so thankful for everyone being so nice to us.
well, we are hyped to go down under...so I will now go down under my bed sheets and get ready to sleepy sleep.
I promise I will keep in better touch everyone.
here is a little video treat from bamboozle for you. take care. love ya. K
Review taken from Punktastic.com http://www.punktastic.com/reviews/gigs/259
Bayside, Brighton Centre Bayside + Moneen & Attack in Black The Pressure Point, Brighton Friday 13th April 2007
Brighton's leading intimate club venue is bursting at the seams tonight with Bayside fans who have travelled far and wide to see the band play their first ever headlining UK date. Being the only south coast date on the tour, there were kids travelling from as far as Devon to make it here to see one of the most resilient bands in today's scene get back in the game.
Before the headlining act, we're treated to quite the display of support act awesomeness in the form of Attack in Black. Travelling all the way from Ontario, they've brought with them their beautiful combination of punk, country and rock 'n roll which wins the crowd over before the end of their first song. Closing on a superb singalong, they're sure to be Hle Records' moneymaker of 2007.
Following them are fellow Canadians Moneen. There's only so many times that I can express exactly how phenomenal this band are live without sounding like I need a lobotomy, but there's truth in every word of it. Moneen have been uninventing music and reconstructing it in their own twisted way for almost a decade now, but they're still as confusing and brilliant as ever. Here's to hoping next time they hit these shores, we'll be seeing them headline.
New York's Bayside unfortunately struggle to live up to their predecessors in tonight's line-up. With a set that lends itself heavily to their latest release, 'The Walking Wounded', they're a competent band but ultimately end up lacking in that extra special something. Combine this with a disappointingly short set and no encore whatsoever, you can't help but be left with the feeling that these four New-Yorkers are yet to find their feet in a headlining slot.
Bayside and Moneen @ the RoadhouseReviewed by Dannii Batters
It's not often that you find two amazing bands touring together, and it's unlikely that if they do it will be at such a small venue. This gig was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
The support band, Attack in Black, warmed the audience up. Although nobody knew who these Canadian kids were, everyone was enjoying it. They had a similar sound Bayside however, the singer sounded a bit like Kermit the Frog to me. They put a lot of effort into their performance, which was just a taster for the amount of energy that would be put into the next two sets. All in all, the band was great, I would recommend checking out their My Space if you're into bands from labels like Vagrant and Drive Thru.
Bayside were on top form although the crowd was quiet to start with, they soon livened up when they played the clic 'Poison in my veins' and a pit formed. Last time I saw Bayside was at the M.E.N where they seemed overwhelmed and out of place, however playing at the Roadhouse with a small crowd suited them and they seemed much more comfortable. They communicated with the audience, played a great set and didn't let the energy of their performance drop. They finished with 'Devotion and Desire' which was the perfect ending. The crowd went wild and the band went wild. The audience continued chanting 'Bayside' after the band had disappeared out of sight.
It doesn't take a lot to realise that Moneen, whether you are a fan are not, are one of the greatest bands to watch live. The whole band has an immense amount of liveliness, but the main performer is undoubtedly the singer, Kenny. He spent the entire show jumping up walls, leaping into the crowd, throwing himself around the stage and dancing on speakers. The amazing thing is he didn't once miss a note. The band played mainly new songs from their latest album 'The Red Tree'. Although a lot of people were not familiar with the songs it didn't stop them from enjoying themselves. When they played an old song such as 'Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now' the small audience easily drowned out the noise of the band. They finished with an extended version of 'The Ping of America'. I'm not sure whether it was planned to be extended or if the band continued the instrumental due to the fact Kenny was on the floor in the audience after being dragged in.
He even handed his guitar over to the rodie to play while he took drumsticks and drummed on everything he could find in the room, including some members of the audience. This band never seizes to amaze me.
We found this clip of a band from China (I think) covering "start angry..end mad" If we ever get to meet these guys I will give them the biggest hugs they have ever gotten. This makes me smile. Notice they even get the delay sounds as well. Thats pretty good.
So we have had a lot of time off since we last toured. I would like to say we ahave a whole new album written...but that is not the case. we all went off in our own directions for a little bit to do our own things. Like I have talked about before, Hippy has a solo project called the smother experiment. Peter has a solo acoustic thing he is doing, I think he is recording songs as we speak. Erik has himself an electonic drumkit that he writes one man metal grind songs with by playing hammer-ons using one hand while doing grind beats with the other. You really need to see this to beleive it. Myself, I have been writing a lot. Moneen songs and kenny songs. As well our good friend Greg Dawson of BWC studios here in Brampton Ontario has called upon me many times to share my love for playing piano badly. I am not a great player at all...but I really like playing and can usually come up with some pretty catchy little piano parts to help along a song ineed of soehting else. There has been a few projects that I am very proud of that I have played on this summer. But the one project that I am the most excited about is my good friend Brian Southall's SEAWEED cover he has been working on. Brian plays in REOS, he has also played a lot of other great bands. He emailed me a little while ago about singing over this seaweed cover he was putting together. He was covering STEADFAST SHRINE for a SEAWEED tribute coming out on Engineer records. (I think it is at least) It was one of those things that are always fun to try and do but never really get done...singing on other peoples songs that is. Seaweed was a band from the 90's that helped shape music within this scene...another band that not enough younger people know about but would be surprised to know how many of their favorite bands were influenced by them. I saw them play the very first warped tour with QUICKSAND, ORANGE 9mm, L7 and SNFU. Oh the good ol' days...what? that was the first time I would get to see Quicksand play, but that is another story altogether.
He sent me the music and it really got me excited to do this. So this time instead of waiting around till the last second I started right away. I was very proud of the song afterwards. I think Brian did an amaazing job re-creating the song. As well I think I did not so bad myself singing it. I wanted to make sure not to just sing the song and call it a day...I wanted to put a lot into this...and I did. Lots of tracks and even more idea trials later I had what I would consider one of my most favorite peices of singing work I have done. Does that make sense?
I wish I could show you what I did...but I am sure the label and everyone working hard to put this record out would be a little sad about it. So instead I will point you to Seaweed's myspace page to hear their own version of STEADFAST SHRINE. Our version sounds a lot different. we stil kept the song intact, but brian added his own twist onto to it. I sang like kenny sings, but I also kept some Seaweed isms as well.
So as far as recording other people's muic...it is going great, as far as ours goes...you will have to wait a little longer.
